Buxton refurbishes one of Melbourne's oldest schools

Buxton Construction has commenced a $3 million refurbishment of Melbourne Grammar School's LOTE and Drama Centre in the Luxton Building.

Projects on school campuses always pose challenges, especially when access and site space are limited, consequently Buxton Construction put considerable planning into the methodology to ensure disruption to daily routine is minimal and contract timelines are adhered to.

Designed by Peter Elliott Architects, the project involves stripping out the first floor of the two-storey building and demolishing a concrete stairway which is replaced by a steel structure with a glazed canopy.  Interior work includes the fit-out of six classrooms, drama room, staff amenities and a fully-fitted kitchen.  Historical exposed roof trusses will be restored.

A raised timber floor over the existing flooring in the drama room has impact mounts to cushion the effects of physical activities.

Renovation of the Domain Road facade includes installation of aluminium windows, making good timber-framed windows and upgrading bluestone walls and the slate roof.

A solar powered air-conditioning and heating system minimises energy consumption while new toilets, sewer drain, storm water system, electrical switchboard and lighting comprise the upgrade of services.

“Buxton Construction was invited to tender because of the outstanding job they did on the major refurbishment and renovation of the clubhouse at Royal Melbourne Golf Club in 2003 when I was club captain,” said Melbourne Grammar School Bursar, David Temple.
