Major upgrade for RSPCA Victoria's Biggest Shelter

A four-level extension to the existing animal welfare centre is the principal component of an upgrade of facilities at RSPCA Burwood East. The extension consists of approximately 1,000 square-metres per floor while a large area of the existing centre will be refurbished.

The structure consists of suspended post tension concrete slabs to each level with a steel framed metal deck roof, the facade comprises a combination of high quality pre-cast, timber and metal cladding with large expanses of double-glazing.  A section of the roof on the original building will be removed to create an atrium with a featured staircase.

The animal welfare centre incorporates specialised animal services including an indoor animal adoption centre, vet clinic and hospital, animal quarantine areas, wildlife area, indoor dog training facility and doggy day care centre, together with staff offices and amenities, a retail outlet, a café and public facilities.  A new entry foyer, designed to be a vibrant, accessible and inviting environment, provides visitors with an expansive view of RSPCA animal welfare services.

Particular attention to the type and level of finishes is critical to cater for the different animal needs.  An elevated concrete walkway is to be constructed linking the external kennel area to the main welfare building.  The project is to be constructed over three stages which consist primarily of stage 1 being the new extension, stage 2 the refurbishment of the existing and stage 3 being the completion of the landscaping and establishment of water recycling wetlands.

The project includes extensive landscaping and incorporates a number of ESD principles such as horizontal sun shading to lower floors, rainwater capture and black water (sewage) recycling.

Project manager, Sweett Group, is working with Buxton Construction for the first time prompting associate director Adrian Vinck to say, “We've been most impressed with the professional way Buxton has gone about its work so far and we're looking forward to maintaining a very harmonious working relationship with them throughout the construction period.”
