The principal component of the contract for the upgrade of facilities at RSPCA Burwood East is a state of the art four-level extension to the existing animal welfare centre. This is the largest project ever taken by the RSPCA.
The extension consists of approximately 1,000 square-metres per floor while a large area of the existing centre will be completely refurbished.
The structure consists of suspended post tensioned concrete slabs to each level with a steel framed metal deck roof, the facade comprises a combination of high quality decorative pre-cast panels, timber metal cladding and large expanses of double-glazed windows. A section of the roof on the original building will be removed to create an atrium with a featured staircase.
Particular attention to the type and level of finishes is critical to cater for the different animal needs. An elevated concrete walkway is to be constructed linking the external kennel area to the main welfare building. The project is to be constructed over three stages which consist primarily of stage 1 being the new extension, stage 2 the refurbishment of the existing and stage 3 being the completion of the landscaping and wetlands
The project includes extensive landscaping and incorporates a number of ESD principles such as horizontal sun shading to lower floors, rainwater capture and black water (sewage) recycling.
